Willis Limited in Return to Practice

Posted Aug 27, 2013

Patrick Willis was spotted at Tuesday’s 49ers practice session.

Patrick Willis was spotted at Tuesday’s 49ers practice session.

The six-time Pro Bowl linebacker wore a blue non-contact jersey while he joined linebackers for individual drills. Willis, who reportedly fractured his hand on July 31, did not catch any passes with his fellow linebackers during the open portion of practice. His right hand was covered by a protective brace, but he still participated in bag drills.

After individual work, Willis worked with the team’s trainers on an adjacent practice field.

Earlier in the day, Vic Fangio was of the belief Willis will return to the 49ers in time for a Week 1 matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

“That’s my impression right now, yes,” the defensive coordinator said. “Now he may have to play with some contraption on his hand for a little bit, but my understanding, he’ll be ready.”

Willis wasn’t the only player in a non-contact uniform. Veteran cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, outside linebacker Cam Johnson and running back Jewel Hampton were also in the non-contact jerseys. Linebacker Nate Stupar returned to practice after missing action since the team’s preseason road win in Kansas City.

In other linebacker news, the 49ers also announced the signing of Joe Holland to a one-year contract. Holland was previously released by the team the day before, but was brought back after San Francisco trimmed its roster to 74 players prior to the 75-man deadline.

The 49ers roster now stands at 75 in time for Thursday's road matchup with the San Diego Chargers.
