What 49ers Players Said after Being Drafted

Posted May 8, 2014

Take a look at what was said right after some of the current members of the roster were drafted by the San Francisco 49ers.

It’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and it just so happens to take place in front of the sports world.

The NFL Draft is a seminal moment for a young athlete. It also brings out a flood of emotion for those who have realized their dreams of playing professional football. Think of the draft-day hugs, tears and ear-to-ear grins – the YouTube clips certainly prove the magnitude of the moment.

It’s also a time to speculate on a future career in the league. With that being said, we looked into the archives to highlight the comments of 49ers players following their personal draft moments.

S Eric Reid, first-round pick in 2013

“I think I’m a very cerebral player. I pride myself on knowing the defense. I pride myself on being able to get the guys lined up on the team, and being a great teammate and also doing my job. I’m very fortunate to be on such an incredible defense with the guys that are up there now, and I just can’t wait to get to work.”

DT Tank Carradine, second-round pick in 2013

“I see myself fitting right in. I can come out there and learn from a great group of guys and also compete as well. You’re coming into a great system and a great team that went to the Super Bowl, and also want to help so we can do a repeat and go back to the Super Bowl and win it. So, I felt like it was a big accomplishment and I’m excited about it.”

WR Quinton Patton, fourth-round pick in 2013

“I’m open to whatever they need me to do. I’m trying to make an immediate impact on my team in the best way I can. It doesn’t matter what it is.”

RB Marcus Lattimore, fourth-round pick in 2013

“It’s still surreal to me. This is a great opportunity with a great organization, and I just can’t wait to get there. I’ve always been a fan of those guys, just their style of play and how they do everything.”

RB LaMichael James, second-round pick in 2012

“I just want to go in there and compete. Those guys (Frank Gore and Kendall Hunter) are great running backs and I’m sure I can learn a lot of things. Just pick up some of those things from those guys and try to be the best I can be and help the team win.”

G Joe Looney, fourth-round pick in 2012

“I’ve always been a physical player. I love run blocking. I love seeing my running back having a great rushing day.”

LB Aldon Smith, first-round pick in 2011

“I’ll bring some sacks, some energy to my athletic side. I still got a lot more. The sky’s the limit for me and I’m going to work hard to reach it.”

QB Colin Kaepernick, second-round pick in 2011

“It’s definitely disappointing seeing other quarterbacks go before you, but once again, I’ve kind of fallen into a perfect situation. I have a great coach, great teammates that are going to be there on offense, so it’s just exciting for me.”

FB Bruce Miller, seventh-round pick in 2011

“I’m just excited to have the opportunity to play in the NFL, if it was at defensive end, if it was at linebacker or fullback - I’m just ready to get out to San Francisco and play some football.”

T Anthony Davis, first-round pick in 2010

“It’s the best feeling in my life. It’s the best feeling ever… I’m just ready to work, ready to learn and am ready to make myself the best tackle that I can be.”

G Mike Iupati, first-round pick in 2010

“Anthony Davis is my good friend that I met at the combine. I was very happy that I came here to the 49ers so that way we could work together and work as a team.”

LB NaVorro Bowman, third-round pick in 2010

“I like to fly around and be in space. With that type of defense, I’ll probably be in the middle somewhere flying around, making plays… I watch Patrick Willis a lot. He’s a great player. I’ve been watching him the past few years. He’s been excelling every single year. I’m glad to have him to learn from. Always having a guy to learn from and get underneath his wings.”

WR Michael Crabtree, first-round pick in 2009

“I’m feeling good about everything, the coaches, the uniforms, the weather. Man, everything is looking good out here. I’m looking forward to meeting my teammates and having the best time we can possibly have.”

LB Patrick Willis, first-round pick in 2007

“I’m ready to go there and give them everything I have got and give the organization everything I have. It’s been a dream, and now that it’s happening. I still can’t believe that it’s going to happen. Today is the first day, and I thank all the people that got me to this point and I just want to continue to press harder and continue to do well, and someday be a Hall of Fame player. That’s my next goal.”

TE Vernon Davis, first-round pick in 2006

“I was just overwhelmed. It was just surprising to hear my name called out on the NFL Draft, being picked number six. It was awesome.”
