“C.J. is a high-energy, productive player with a strong team-first mentality who is still developing,” said 49ers General Manager Trent Baalke. “We are pleased to come to terms with C.J. for another three years, and look forward to his continued contributions to our organization, both on and off the field.”
Spillman (6-0, 199) was claimed off waivers by the 49ers on 10/12/10. He has played in all 27 games regular season games since joining the club and leads the team with 40 specials teams tackles over the last two seasons. In 2011, Spillman led the team with 19 special teams tackles. According to NFL game books, he ranked tied for second in the NFL with 14 special teams stops last year.
Spillman originally entered the league as an undrafted free agent with the San Diego Chargers, in 2009. In his career, he has played in 37 games (one start), notching 13 tackles and 49 special team stops.
A 25-year old native of Louisville, KY, Spillman starred collegiately at Marshall, where he earned Second-Team All-Conference USA honors, as a senior.
