Josh Johnson is back with the San Francisco 49ers.

San Francisco signed the 6-foot3, 205-pound veteran quarterback to a one-year contract on Wednesday, making him the fifth quarterback on the current roster.

In order to make room for Johnson on the 90-man roster, the team released defensive tackle Christian Tupou who was signed on Jan. 22 to a Reserve/Future contract.

The 49ers currently have five quarterbacks on the roster: Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert, McLeod Bethel-Thompson, undrafted free agent Kory Faulkner and now Johnson.

Johnson is back for a second stint with the 49ers. He was among San Francisco’s final roster cuts in the 2012 preseason.

Johnson spent last season with the Cincinnati Bengals and was released on Monday, two days after the team selected Alabama quarterback AJ McCarron in the fifth round of the NFL Draft.

Johnson has appeared in 29 games since entering the league in 2009. He has completed 96 of 177 pass attempts for 1,042 yards with five touchdown passes and 10 interceptions. Johnson has also rushed 44 times for 274 yards in his career.

The athletic quarterback will reunite with Jim Harbaugh, his college coach at the University of San Diego. Johnson owns many USD passing records, including touchdown passes (113), completions (724), attempts (1,065) and passing yards (9.699).
