Rookie Report: Corey Lemonier

Posted Oct 4, 2013

In our latest edition of this series, 49ers.com focuses on the recent impact made by Corey Lemonier at outside linebacker.

Corey Lemonier doesn't care anymore that his last name -- lemon-YAY -- gets mispronounced.

"It’s an ongoing thing," the first-year 49ers linebacker said. "People are still figuring it out right now."

They will be more aware of the Auburn product after his three-tackle game in the 49ers Week 4 win over the St. Louis Rams. Lemonier, San Francisco's third-round draft pick last April, received his most playing time yet in the victory, splitting snaps at outside linebacker with Dan Skuta.

“The way the game unfolded, Corey played a little bit more than Dan," defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Wednesday. "We’re treating it like we did in 2011 (with Parys Haralson and Aldon Smith), where Dan is playing the base stuff and Corey is playing the sub stuff. Although they both can be interchangeable."

EXPERIENCE IN ST. LOUIS

It was exciting. There are some things I need to work on – staying lower in my pass-rush and reading the offense better – but I think I did some good things out there. Splitting time with Dan, it helps take off the pressure, but I think we both did a really good job.

NFL STAGE VS. BCS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

It was different because this is just more everybody is good in this league. Just the whole preparation of going into that game, my mindset was a lot different from college in the BCS Title game because in college I was playing but I was in a backup role. Now I’m going to be rotating in a starting role for the Rams game. It was exciting. I liked it.

LEARNING FROM AHMAD AND ALDON

Just watching them, asking them questions about drops and pass-rushing stuff – I think they were pretty big with me in learning that language going from defensive end to linebacker. They helped me out a lot.

COLLEGE RIVALRIES WITH FELLOW ROOKIES

Me and Quinton Dial will get into it. He will talk about who Alabama, his alma mater, plays this week, and I’ll be like, ‘You know who got at the end of the season, right? Just keep walking.’ It’s a pretty good group of rookies, and I like to work with all of them.

NEW SURROUNDINGS

This is my first time being on the West Coast except for when I was in Arizona for training for the NFL Scouting Combine. That was the only time I had visited the West Coast other than for the national championship game in 2010. The weather here is nice. It’s nice year-round.

AWAY FROM WORK

I’m a quiet person, so I just hang out with my dog. She’s a Pit Bull-Lab named “Flo,” just like the Progressive spokeswoman.

PASS-RUSHER'S PASTIME

I like to cook, do good stuff in the kitchen. I make this chicken fajita, but I sauté it in a honey mixture. I add some more stuff for a secret recipe.
