Rival GM on Jimmy Garoppolo: 'I'm Kind of Bummed They Got Him'

Posted Mar 7, 2018

Check out what the 49ers rivals are saying about the team's new franchise quarterback.

You may have seen Sean McVay’s glowing scouting report of Jimmy Garoppolo at last week’s NFL Combine.

“He’s a natural thrower of the football,” the Rams head coach said last week in Indianapolis. “He can move around and buy time with his legs. He can change the launch point, and he showed great feel for the play action game. You see why they’re excited about him.”

But McVay wasn’t the only NFC West rival to discuss the San Francisco 49ers new franchise quarterback. Both Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider and head coach Pete Carroll were asked about Garoppolo as well.

Schneider’s press conferences are usually entertaining as he always adds a bit of humor to his mostly informative answers. His combine chat with the media was no different. Schneider’s response regarding Garoppolo began by stating the obvious before adding a fun jab in at the end.

“He looked great. He looked phenomenal,” the GM said before pausing. “I’m kind of bummed out they got him.”

Schneider was smiling when he delivered the quote, but it goes without saying that no NFL general manager would be thrilled about a potential upper echelon quarterback joining their division.

Carroll elaborated a bit more on Garoppolo.

“He certainly did some good things,” Carroll said. “They had a great finish to the season. He obviously added a spark to them. He’s a great get for (the 49ers). It’s going to be good for the division for sure. It’s going to make it more challenging. They certainly had a feel for what he could do.”

The Seahawks were the first to see Garoppolo, albeit for just a few snaps. Garoppolo entered for an injured C.J. Beathard on the 49ers final drive of the game. In just three plays, he scrambled for a 4-yard gain, completed an 8-yard pass to Aldrick Robinson to convert a fourth down and threw a 10-yard touchdown pass to Louis Murphy as time expired.

Garoppolo went on to win all five of his starts down the stretch with 1,560 passing yards and eight total touchdowns. Now Seattle will get to see him twice a year in NFC West matchups.
