Late in the first half of a Sept. 26 matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and the St. Louis Rams.

Edward Jones Dome, St. Louis, Mo.

Frank Gore ripped off a 34-yard touchdown run on a 4th-and-1 play.

Gore, San Francisco’s stalwart running back, followed the block of his pulling Pro Bowl left guard Mike Iupati and found the narrowest of windows to pick up the necessary yard to move the chains and 33 more yards to score his longest touchdown run of 2013.

The Rams stacked the short-yardage scenario with a 9-man box. Once the defense was unable to reach Gore in the backfield or fully clog interior running lanes, San Francisco’s offensive line successfully walled off the right side of St. Louis’ defensive front and created a large enough crease for Gore to breakthrough and find daylight.

Gore never slowed down. The 30-year-old runner never had any wasted movement as he approached the line of scrimmage. When Iupati met rookie linebacker Alec Ogletree in the hole, Gore was able to sneak behind his 331-pound guard and had nothing but open space as he darted through the second level of the Rams defense. Second-year free safety Rodney McLeod had the next chance to tackle Gore, but was unable to get down into the box fast enough. McLeod came crashing down and made a diving attempt to swipe at Gore’s legs but could not make the play. Gore powered his way through the arm tackle and out-raced second-year cornerback Janoris Jenkins to the front right pylon.
