Phil Dawson Nearly Cut from Son's Fantasy Football Team

Posted Oct 8, 2014

The NFC’s reigning Special Teams Player of the Week was almost released from a team this year – his son’s fantasy football team.

The National Football League is really a “What have you done for me lately?” business.

Phil Dawson knows this all too well.

The NFC’s reigning Special Teams Player of the Week was almost released from a team this year – his son’s fantasy football team.

Dawson said he learned of his award from his two sons on Wednesday morning.

"I usually get a phone call from home," Dawson said. "My kids follow it closely, so that's usually a fun phone call."

Dawson said his son's are supportive, but to a certain point.

"I know one of them was thinking about dropping me when I was off to a slow start this season," Dawson said.

Dawson survived the roster scare and has gone on to build serious momentum as the San Francisco 49ers kicker. He’s made nine kicks in a row, including five in last week’s 22-17 win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

The 49ers needed every one of Dawson’s 16 points. It was the most points recorded by an NFC kicker in any game this season. He also connected on a pair of kicks from 50-plus yards out.

Dawson scored San Francisco’s final nine points of the game, including a go-ahead field goal with 8:42 left in the game.

Dawson has won the NFL weekly award five times. He won it twice with the Cleveland Browns and has taken home the honor three times with the 49ers.

Dawson is the first 49ers kicker to make at least five field goals in a game without a miss since 1996 when Jeff Wilkins accomplished the feat on Sept. 29 of the ’96 season.

It’s not fully known, but one could assume that Dawson helped his son win a fantasy football game.

And if he didn’t, Dawson at least held up his end of the bargain and will survive another week on the squad.

"Every week is a new opportunity to put 'em through or miss 'em," Dawson said. "Last week was a good one, but I've got to start it all over this week and try to get ready for another one."

For those scoring at home, Dawson ranks seventh among all kickers on NFL.com's fantasy football scoring chart with 45 points. He also has the most 50-yard kicks in the league with three such makes.
