Observations from Day 3 of 49ers-Ravens Camp

Posted Aug 11, 2014

The final day of joint practices between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens was a pad-less morning session.

OWINGS MILLS, Md. – The final day of joint practices between the San Francisco 49ers and Baltimore Ravens was a pad-less morning session.

Although the physicality wasn't the same as Saturday and Sunday's work, the speed on the field remained impressive for both sides.

After hearing from both Harbaugh coaches, it sounded like each side got a lot out of the practices.

"Better than expected," Jim Harbaugh said. "We got better. That's even more so than we thought."

Ravens coach John Harbaugh agreed.

"I feel like we got a week's worth of work."

Here are the noteworthy aspects of the final practice between the two Harbaugh-coached teams:

-Vance McDonald missed a third day of practice. Veteran offensive lineman Adam Snyder, cornerbacks Chris Culliver and Chris Cook, plus linebacker Shayne Skov were also notable players not taking part in on-field work.

-Second-year cornerback Darryl Morris and rookie cornerback Dontae Johnson took reps with the first-team defense along with veteran Perrish Cox.

-The opening 7-on-7 period saw Colin Kaepernick complete an 18-yard touchdown pass to tight end Vernon Davis on a seam route. Jim Harbaugh said Davis has been under-the-radar impressive in this camp. Rookie receiver Bruce Ellington made a couple of nice catches in the period, including one on a deep post from Kaepernick. San Francisco's starting quarteback finished the drill by completing a deep ball to Anquan Boldin in betweeen Baltimore defenders.

-In a two-minute drill, Kaepernick led the offense into the red zone but a third-down pass for Quinton Patton went incomplete. It appeared as though the second-year receiver was interfered with before the ball arrived, but no flag was thrown. The offense settled for a field goal.

-In the red zone 11-on-11 period, Kaepernick found Davis again for a touchdown. This time, Kaepernick rolled to his left and completed a high pass to his tight end in the back of the end zone.

-In the team period from midfield, Blaine Gabbert's pass to undrafted tight end Asante Cleveland was bobbled and intercpeted by Ravens linebacker John Simon.

-In a red zone team period, Kaepernick completed a 5-yard touchdown pass to tight end Derek Carrier. Kaepernick followed it up with a short touchdown throw to Boldin. In the same period, veteran safety D.J. Campbell intercepted Ravens rookie quarterback Keith Wenning.

-Practice ended with both teams meeting at midfield on one of the practice fields. Both sides broke off and had a final word from their respective head coaches.

-Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Bud Norris watched practice with family and friends. The native of Novato, Calif., will pitch Monday night against the New York Yankees.
