NFC West Report: Offseason Update on Cardinals, Seahawks and Rams

Posted Jul 8, 2014

Carson Palmer is still Arizona's starting quarterback; Marshawn Lynch may want a new contract with Seattle; and Michael Sam is not calling extra attention to himself in St. Louis.

Your San Francisco 49ers are counting down the days until training camp, which begins the final week of this month.

But so are their closest rivals.

To bring you up to speed on the 49ers NFC West rivals, here are the most important storylines to consider since the division's NFL Draft results in May and, before that, the schedule release fallout in April.

Arizona Cardinals

Summer news: Carson Palmer remains entrenched as the team's starting signal-caller after throwing 24 touchdowns against 22 interceptions in his first season in Arizona... Former quarterback Kurt Warner will be the newest member of the franchise's "Ring of Honor."

Story worth sharing: AZCardinals.com's Kyle Odegard told the tale of draftee Walt Powell, who followed brother and former 49ers player Brandon Williams to the NFL.

Seattle Seahawks

Summer news: Running back Marshawn Lynch, coming off his appearance in ESPN The Magazine's "Body Issue," had expressed a desire for a new contract. With two years remaining on his deal, he was present for the team's mandatory minicamp but didn't practice because of an ankle injury... Wideout Doug Baldwin has been moved from flanker to split end, where departed free agent Golden Tate assumed last year... Late last month, Seattle signed wide receiver Kevin Smith and released defensive tackle Andru Pulu.

Story to share: Seahawks.com's Tony Drovetto recapped the team's Super Bowl trophy tour in Canada.

St. Louis Rams

Summer news: Michael Sam, the first openly gay player in the NFL, postponed the documentary series he was set to be featured in on the Oprah Winfrey Network. Sam, a seventh-round draft pick, is competing to make the team as a pass-rusher... Quarterback Sam Bradford, who tore his ACL last season, took part in team drills during St. Louis' offseason program.

Story to share: StLouisRams.com's Jonathan Webb offered a first look at Sam, and it's worth looking back upon.
