Morning Tailgate: Top 5 Niners

Posted Feb 18, 2014

Who are the top 5 members of the San Francisco 49ers? Our Morning Tailgate shares the opinion of one beat writer.

Here at 49ers.com, we're always looking to get one percent better every single day just like the football team. We created our "Morning Tailgate" series two offseasons ago to keep fans aware of all interesting news items regarding the San Francisco 49ers.

We're still going to do that in 2014 and beyond. However, we'll soon be unveiling a new format on how to deliver the best, most newsworthy items to you, the 49ers Faithful.

So before we look at today's morning headlines, we'd like to thank you for your continued support and interest in our morning news series.

In the coming weeks we'll announce our next news-sharing service for the fans.

Stay tuned.

As for the news (get to the point Taylor...) here are the headlines that caught my eye.

Bill Williamson of ESPN.com continues to crank out news for the 49ers fans. He recently concluded his top 60 rankings of current 49ers players.

Williamson listed the following top 5:

1. Quarterback Colin Kaepernick: This is the most important position on any team and the 49ers (who have one of the best rosters in the NFL) are in fine shape with Kaepernick as their quarterback. He has a 21-8 record in 29 NFL starts and he's getting better.

2. Linebacker NaVorro Bowman: Bowman had an unreal 2013 season, but it ended with him tearing his ACL in his knee in the NFC title game. I talked to some scouts and they believe he still belongs in this spot even though he may not be 100 percent when next season starts.

3. Linebacker Aldon Smith: If Smith's off-field troubles are behind him, his future is boundless. He is a dominant, complete player.

4. Tackle Joe Staley: This left tackle just keeps on being dominant. The glue of a great offensive line.

5. Wide receiver Michael Crabtree: No, Richard Sherman, Crabtree is neither "sorry" nor "mediocre." He showed how important he was to this offense when he returned from a torn Achilles in December. A healthy Crabtree means the world to this offense.

In other news...

Matt Maiocco of CSNBayArea.com discussed his thoughts on how the 49ers will treat free agents in 2014.

Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee analyzed the physical receivers in this year's draft.

Mark Purdy of the San Jose Mercury News caught up with Vernon Davis at the 2014 Winter Olympics.
