The 49ers training camp battle for the right to back up starter
McCoy told reporters postgame that he was due to receive a precautionary MRI on that shoulder on Friday morning despite his belief that the feeling he experienced could just be a “stinger” to his neck. He first felt uncomfortable on a first-down play late in the second quarter when a broken play forced him to keep the ball for a one-yard loss.
Three plays later, McCoy threw an interception to Broncos safety Mike Adams. He expressed regret that he stayed in the game.
“First time in a uniform in a new place. Lots of excitement. I was actually feeling pretty good up until that moment,” McCoy said. “I was having fun. This is a sweet place. So that’s a little frustrating.”
With McCoy on the bench, Tolzien – not Daniels, who only appeared with the kick return unit late in the fourth quarter – took the rest of the snaps under center. The three-year vet, who planned to use Friday to watch film, completed 15 of his 26 passes for a game-high 158 yards.
”Some good. Some could be better,” Jim Harbaugh said of Scott Tolzien’s snaps under center. “I really felt as the game was flowing and Colt was out, it was a good opportunity for Scott to get that action.”
