Morning Tailgate: Eric Reid, Alex Smith Win for Rice

Posted Jan 27, 2014

The current 49ers safety and ex-49ers quarterback helped the 49ers Hall of Fame wide receiver's Pro Bowl team to victory over the weekend.

Eric Reid didn't start in his first Pro Bowl appearance, and he didn't put up gaudy numbers.

But Reid, who was selected to the NFL’s all-star exhibition as a replacement player, will more likely remember playing for Jerry Rice.

He’ll definitely remember helping Rice win.

Reid and ex-49ers quarterback Alex Smith, now the Kansas City Chiefs signal-caller, helped Team Rice top Team (Deion) Sanders in Sunday’s newly-formatted Pro Bowl in Honolulu.

Reid didn’t crack the box score, while Smith led the victorious squad’s game-winning drive, which culminated with a 20-yard touchdown toss to Dallas Cowboys running back DeMarco Murray and a successful two-point try. Smith, who spent his first seven NFL seasons in San Francisco, was 9-of-22 passing for 116 yards overall.

Like Smith, Reid was making his Pro Bowl debut. The rookie safety made 77 tackles during his rookie season, while creating six turnovers.
