The opening of Thursday’s camp practice saw third-year cornerback Chris Culliver get injured in an early special teams period. Culliver was covering punts as a gunner and tried to cut back to his right against the block of rookie cornerback Marcus Cooper.
Culliver immediately went down and stayed down for a few minutes. He eventually was carted to the locker room.
Hours after the injury, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com
reported Culliver has a torn ACL. Jim Harbaugh said Culliver would undergo an MRI after the injury, the team has not confirmed the findings of the NFL.com report.
Defensive coordinator Vic Fangio is scheduled to speak with the media at 11:30 a.m. PT and could perhaps shed light on the reported findings of Culliver’s MRI.

Culliver was competing as San Francisco’s No. 3 cornerback and was having a strong training camp prior to his injury. Culliver recorded his first interception of camp on Wednesday, stepping in front of a Colin Kaepernick pass intended for Chad Hall.
If Culliver is sidelined for the 2013 season, Tramaine Brock and Nnamdi Asomugha are likely to compete for No. 3 cornerback duties. Brock had first crack at nickel cornerback following Culliver’s injury. Asomugha, however, has been steadily making “eye-popping” plays according to Jim Harbaugh.
