Morning Tailgate: College-Like Rivalry

Posted Sep 11, 2013

Aldon Smith, Ian Williams and B.J. Daniels relive their amateur days as they look forward to playing a 49ers rival in Seattle.

The 49ers-Seahawks battle on Sunday has all the makings of a college football rivalary game. Coaches with choppy history at the amateur level -- Jim Harbaugh at Stanford facing off with Peter Carroll at USC -- and the din of CenturyLink Field confines.

Many of San Francisco's players know the feeling of playing in such a big game.

For defensive tackle Ian Williams, a Notre Dame product, he and his collegiate teammates had a national following and more than one nemesis.

"Everybody is a rival," he said. "The biggest was USC or Michigan... (But) it's different. College is more pageantry and the student body. Pro is a little more regional."

Speaking of, 49ers outside linebacker Aldon Smith's Missouri squad met neighbor Kansas under tense circumstances.

"It was a big game," Smith said. "It's a big rivalry."

But perhaps the fans weren't as vociferous in the Midwest as they were down south. 49ers rookie quarterback B.J. Daniels hasn't experienced anything quite like playing for South Florida at the University of Florida.

"That was the loudest game I've been a part of," he said.

What's he expecting in Seattle on Sunday?

"I knew (about Qualcomm) when I was in college," he said. "I haven't been there, but just hearing about how loud it is, I assume it will be the same way this weekend."
