Morning Tailgate: Baldwin Eyeing Bigger Role

Posted Sep 27, 2013

In his 49ers debut on Thursday night, wide receiver Jon Baldwin made two catches on third-down plays.

It is said that, in third-down situations, a quarterback looks for the pass-catcher he trusts the most.

It is also said that he'll throw to anybody who's on his team and open.

Either way, Colin Kaepernick seemed to show confidence in newcomer Jon Baldwin's ability to separate from defensive backs during the 49ers 35-11 win in St. Louis on Thursday night.

Twice on third-down attempts during the third quarter, Kaepernick found Baldwin for gains. On the first occurence, they connected for 15 yards to convert 3rd-and-9. The key playpushed San Francisco's offense into enemy territory and paved the way for Kaepernick's 12-yard touchdown toss to tight end Vernon Davis.

The two receptions were Baldwin's first in a 49ers uniform. Acquired from the Kansas City Chiefs late in the preseason, he was inactive for Weeks 1, 2 and 3 of the regular season.

"He caught the skinny post and then he caught a slant as well," Jim Harbaugh said of Baldwin postgame Thursday night. "It was good to see him out there and compete. Have a good feeling about him."
