Morning Tailgate: Asomugha Solid at CB

Posted Aug 18, 2013

Nnamdi Asomugha has performed like a savvy 11-year veteran in his first two games with the 49ers.

Nnamdi Asomugha has performed like a savvy 11-year veteran in his first two games with the 49ers.

The free agent addition has brought depth to San Francisco’s competitive cornerback group. Asomugha, 32, has also unleashed a few big-time hits in two preseason games.

In a Week 1 home matchup against the Denver Broncos, Asomugha delivered a solid form-tackle against first-year wideout Gerell Robinson.

In a Week 2 road contest against another AFC West opponent, the Kansas City Chiefs, Asomugha blitzed from his right cornerback position to level Alex Smith. The former 49ers quarterback had to escape the pocket and throw the ball away much quicker than he wanted to on a third-down play.

Asomugha saw a lot of action in the first half of the 49ers road win in Kansas City. He also ran stride-for-stride with speedy third-year wideout Jon Baldwin on a pair of deep routes.

Smith overthrew Baldwin on both passes, but Asomugha was in position to make a play on the ball. So far, Asomugha has demonstrated his physicality, versatility and coverage skills in the preseason.
