Manningham, 27, has signed a one-year contract to return to the Giants, the team that drafted him in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft. Manningham spent his first four NFL seasons with New York and was a key member of its Super Bowl XLVI-winning club.

The following season, Manningham signed a two-year deal with the 49ers and was the team’s second-leading receiver, catching 42 passes for 449 yards and one touchdown. Manningham suffered a late-season injury and went on to spent most of the 2013 season recovering from the setback. The 6-foot, 185-pound wideout appeared in six games this past season, catching nine passes for 85 yards before being placed on Injured Reserve on Dec. 27.

Manningham is San Francisco’s fourth free agency departure this offseason. He joins safety Donte Whitner (Cleveland Browns), cornerback Tarell Brown (Oakland Raiders) and running back Anthony Dixon (Buffalo Bills) as former 49ers on new teams.
