Former 49ers executive Lou Spadia passed away at the age of 92.

Longtime San Francisco 49ers executive Louis G. Spadia passed away on Sunday, Feb. 17, at the age of 92. An original front office member under Morabito family, Spadia spent more than three decades with the team, ultimately becoming a part owner and serving as the team’s president from 1967-76.

Spadia began working in the 49ers front office when the 49ers were founded in 1946, holding such positions as ticket manager and equipment manager, while also handling team travel arrangements. In 1948, he became the 49ers business manager, a position he held until 1951 when he was promoted to general manager. Spadia was named team president in 1967, and later added the title of general manager in 1973, positions he held until 1976. During that time, the 49ers won three consecutive NFC West division titles from 1970-72.

In addition to his efforts with the 49ers, Spadia founded the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 1979, and served as its president and CEO until 2003. He was a BASHOF inductee in 1999. Spadia grew up in the Potrero Hill section of San Francisco and attended Mission High School. He served in the Navy during World War II before being hired by the 49ers.

A funeral service is scheduled for 10:30 AM on Tuesday, February 26 at Saint Pius Catholic Church (1100 Woodside Road, Redwood City, CA).
