Notes: In his season debut, wideout Mario Manningham recorded a team-high three catches for 30 yards... Outside linebacker Aldon Smith returned from his extended absence... Fellow 'backer Ahmad Brooks pointed to Smith's return as a contributing factor to his career high-tying three sacks of Panthers quarterback Cam Newton... 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick registered a single-start career low 91 passing yards... Kaepernick was sacked six times and threw one interception... Tight ends Vernon Davis (concussion) and Garrett Celek (hamstring) depleted his pass-catching options in the first half... The defense was also forced to play without safety Eric Reid (concussion) defensive tackle Ray McDonald (ankle)... The unit still limited Newton and Co. to 10 points... Newton, dangerous with his right arm and legs, was held to 186 yards of total offense... Panthers running back DeAngelo Williams' 27-yard touchdown run on the other side of the first half's two-minute warning represented the game's lone touchdown... The loss ran the 49ers record to 6-3 and preceded a 6-1 finish to the regular season... The Panthers won eight of their final eight games to go 12-4 overall, earning the NFC's No. 2 seed.
