Kyle Shanahan Provides Injury Update on LB Malcolm Smith, G Joshua Garnett

Posted Aug 5, 2017

The 49ers got some bad news on Saturday with potential serious injuries to two key pieces on the roster.

The San Francisco 49ers received some unfortunate news amid an otherwise festive day at Levi's® Stadium. Kyle Shanahan told reporters following Saturday's open practice that linebacker Malcolm Smith (upper body) and guard Joshua Garnett (knee) could miss significant time due to injury.

"Malcolm seemed a bit more serious," Shanahan said. "He's going to get it checked out now, and I'll have more for you later. I have a feeling it's going to be a little bit with Malcolm.

"Josh is more in Malcolm's boat. There's some stuff in his knee that we're probably going to have to clean up. We don't expect it to be anthing long term, but it's going to be a little bit of time. ... Neither of them are good news, that's for sure."

Smith's injury, coupled with Brock Coyle's ribs injury, could open the door for Reuben Foster to get into the starting lineup sooner rather than later. Foster has been a standout at camp thus far but will still have to earn the starting job.

With Garnett out of the picture for the time being, Tim Barnes, Brandon Fusco, Daniel Kilgore, Jeremy Zuttah and Zane Beadles will be the 49ers options at the two guard spots.

We will continue to update you as we learn more about each injury.

UPDATE: NFL Network's Ian Rapoport tweeted that Smith has a torn pec and will miss the entire 2017 season.
