Kap Won over Harbaugh with Combine Interview

Posted Feb 20, 2014

The 49ers coach relived his 2011, pre-draft sit-down with his current quarterback.

INDIANAPOLIS – Colin Kaepernick met Jim Harbaugh for the first time at the 2011 NFL Scouting Combine.

When the Nevada quarterback walked into the 49ers interview room in Indianapolis, Harbaugh instantly thought of his other famous pupil.

“He lit up the room and reminded me of Andrew Luck,” Harbaugh said on Thursday.

Kaepernick would end up being the team’s No. 36 overall draft pick three years ago. Since then, the dynamic athlete has become one of the up-and-coming quarterbacks in the NFL.

It’s very likely that Kaepernick’s career in San Francisco would not have reached its current point if not for that first memorable encounter.

“I got so excited after that meeting with him, how well spoken he was, how quick-minded he was,” Harbaugh remembered of the private sit-down.

“Watching him going through the drills, sometimes he just looked like a great athletic specimen.”

Harbaugh still marvels over Kaepernick’s physical stature.

“Steve Young and Colin presented an award at NFL Honors,” the 49ers coach said. “Steve looked like a junior high kid next to Colin. No offense,Steve, we love you. He had that kind of effect when you saw what a great, well trained physical specimen Mr. Kaepernick is.”

Kaepernick is continuing his hard work in the offseason. The 49ers quarterback is currently training in Miami, a fact that doesn't surprise Harbaugh.

“I never have any questions about Colin Kaepernick’s work ethic and his desire to be great, and he already is pretty darn good,” the 49ers coach said when asked about where his quarterback can improve the most in 2014. “I don’t know that there will be dramatic increases when you’re that good, but he’ll find away to get one mile an hour faster. That’s just how he trains.”
