Kaepernick Has Best Day of Camp

Posted Aug 11, 2013

Colin Kaepernick put on an absolute clinic at Sunday’s training camp session.

Colin Kaepernick put on an absolute clinic at Sunday’s training camp session.

The third-year quarterback demonstrated his big-time throwing arm and then used his quick feet and long running strides to create more time to record back-to-back touchdown throws in the red zone.

It was the most accurate practice of Kaepernick’s camp and it continued to prove that San Francisco's quarterback has built trust in his tight end, Vernon Davis.

Kaepernick connected with Davis on a 60-yard touchdown in the opening team period of practice. An hour later, the two hooked up on several more deep throws.

Kaepernick rifled one ball to Davis from 40 yards out. The 49ers tight end displayed world-class hands to snatch the ball out of the air. Kaepernick also lofted a corner route in between Carlos Rogers and Craig Dahl’s tight coverage on Davis.

In the red zone, the 49ers quarterback flashed his improvisational skills. In one instance, Kaepernick rolled to his right, escaped pressure and darted a pass to Frank Gore, who sprawled out to make a diving reception in the right corner of the end zone.

On the very next play, Kaepernick bounced out of the pocket, ran to his left and flipped a short pass to Gore, who had an easy lane into the end zone.

Not to be forgotten, Kaepernick had a solid day completing passes to his receivers. Kaepernick had a high completion percentage on the day, he hit several intermediate passes. Anquan Boldin, Kyle Williams and Marlon Moore all had receptions from Kaepernick.

Bruce Miller and Garrett Celek also caught deep balls from the 49ers quarterback.

Training Camp Notes

-Rookie tight end Vance McDonald missed his first practice of camp. Joe Staley, Tarell Brown and Jewell Hampton also took the session off due to undisclosed injuries.

-Colt McCoy did not wear the non-contact jersey after wearing one on Saturday. The fourth-year quarterback took part in all periods of practice and completed the only reception of the day to A.J. Jenkins.

-Eric Reid and Dahl split reps with the first-team defense. Nnamdi Asomugha lined up at right cornerback in place of Brown.

-NaVorro Bowman was a one-man wrecking crew in a period against the scout-team offense. First, the All-Pro inside linebacker lowered a thundering hit on rookie running back D.J. Harper. Next, Bowman chased down Harper on the very next play for a tackle-for-loss around the right edge of the line. To close out the period, Bowman dropped back into coverage and made a one-handed interception on a Scott Tolzien pass.

-Undrafted rookie cornerback Daryl Morris recorded an interception on a B.J. Daniels pass in a nickel defense period.

-Austin Collie made a pair of tough catches. One was a high pass from Daniels, the other was on a low pass from McCoy.
