Harbaugh Supports Bowman-inspired Rule Change

Posted Mar 24, 2014

An unreviewable play that went against the San Francisco 49ers in January's NFC Championship Game could be changed for all of the NFL come next season.

An unreviewable play that went against the San Francisco 49ers in January's NFC Championship Game could result in a rule change for all of the NFL come next season.

Jim Harbaugh said Monday that he would be in favor of officials being able to review plays during which the ball changes hands and is recovered.

"We'll be for it," Harbaugh told CSNBayArea.com and other media at the owners' meetings in Orlando, where teams could approve the expansion of replay in a vote this week. "I think it has a good chance to be adopted – common sense."

Call it the "NaVorro Bowman" rule. Late in the Jan. 19 conference title game, the 49ers linebacker forced Seattle Seahawks wideout Jermaine Kearse's fumble near the goal line and appeared to recover it before severely injuring his knee.

TV highlights showed the All-Pro 'backer down by contact with the ball in hand, but officials on the field ruled that Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch swiped the ball from him before the play concluded.

Because the sequence was not reviewable, the Seahawks were awarded possession in their eventual 23-17 victory.
