Five Things about Colin Kaepernick's New Contract

Posted Jun 4, 2014

The 2011 second-round NFL Draft pick will be around for seven more seasons. Here are some deeper observations about his new deal.

No. 7 is signed for seven more years. Here are five things to note about Colin Kaepernick's six-year contract extension through the 2020 season.

1. He lengthens the line of good-to-great quarterbacks.

If Kaepernick has another "breakout" season the way Jim Harbaugh expects him to, he will become the eighth 49ers signal-caller to lead the team in passing for three straight seasons. He would follow Alex Smith, Jeff Garcia, Steve Young, Joe Montana, Steve DeBerg, John Brodie, Y.A. Tittle and Frankie Albert.

2. He is not alone among 2011 draftees sticking around.

Kaepernick is the third member of his class, after center Daniel Kilgore (three-year deal, Feb. 27) and fullback Bruce Miller (three-year deal, March 20), to re-up with San Francisco. Other '11 peers to watch: outside linebacker Aldon Smith and cornerback Chris Culliver, plus running back Kendall Hunter.

3. He sets the new market value for a franchise quarterback.

According to published reports, "Kap" will become one of the league's highest-paid players. The quarterback he succeeded in San Francisco, Smith, is in line for a new deal with the Kansas City Chiefs. Stay tuned.

4. He's only going to get better.

Harbaugh said it. Many of us think it. Yes, Kaepernick has won 17 of his first 23 NFL starts and scored 40 touchdowns. But consider this: He won't turn 27 until after Week 9 next season, just his second full season of starting. As coach likes to say: Arrow up.

5. He meets a fitting first opponent at Levi's® Stadium.

When Kaepernick cleats the grass at the 49ers new home on Sept. 14, he'll face the Chicago Bears for the first time since his first NFL start. Filling in for Smith on the Nov. 19, 2012 edition of "Monday Night Football," he was 16-of-23 passing for 243 yards and two touchdowns. Look forward to the rematch.
