Daniels Emerges in QB Battle

Posted Aug 17, 2013

With B.J. Daniels playing so well in Friday's preseason victory, the competition for the No. 2 quarterback slot intensifies.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – B.J. Daniels’ preseason debut was worth the wait.

The seventh-round pick didn’t get in the 49ers Week 1 preseason game at quarterback, but made the most of his opportunities in a Week 2 road win over the Kansas City Chiefs.

Daniels engineered the final scoring drive in San Francisco’s 15-13 road win.

The 49ers drove the ball 90 yards on 14 plays. The rookie quarterback completed passes for gains of 13, 11, 16, 14, 4, and the best of all, a 14-yard touchdown pass to rookie Chuck Jacobs on a 3rd-and-7 from Kansas City’s 14-yard line.

“I was fortunate to hit the guys that were open and make the most of my opportunities,” Daniels said. “That is what I am going to continue to do. Any way I can help this team is what I am going to try to do.”

Daniels might end up helping the team as a No. 2 quarterback. Colt McCoy and Scott Tolzien alternated possessions in the first three quarters of the game, but it was Daniels who led the 49ers to score the team’s first touchdown of the preseason.

Harbaugh reiterated that Daniels is still in the mix for the backup job behind Colin Kaepernick.

“He’s been there this past week,” Harbaugh said.

Daniels took plenty of second-team reps in practice and will likely continue seeing more opportunities after his strong preseason debut.

The rookie completed 6 of 9 passes for 72 yards and finished with a 128.0 quarterback rating. McCoy went 3 of 6 for 35 yards with an interception and a 28.5 passer rating. Tolzien completed 3 of 8 passes for 30 yards with a 49.0 passer rating.

“Colt had a good performance except the one interception he threw,” Jim Harbaugh said. “Scott did some nice things, too, but had a couple glitches.”

Starting quarterback Colin Kaepernick didn’t need the game work in the eyes of his coach.

“We’re good with Colin,” Harbaugh said when explaining the reasoning for Kaepernick playing in only the first serried of the game.

“I think we know what we’ve got with Colin. We’re in the second preseason game and I didn’t want anything freakish to happen.”

The competitor in Kaepernick wanted to play, especially on a night where his team faced his former mentor, Alex Smith.

Despite the lack of playing time, Kaepernick remained consistent in his team-first approach.

“I don’t like being on the sideline,” he said. “Whatever the coaches ask of me, I’ll do.”

Kaepernick remained supportive of his young teammates. He also shared his praise of Daniels’ debut.

“He had a great drive, a lot of poise and made plays when it really counted.”
