Baalke Puts Crabtree’s Comeback in Perspective

Posted Feb 21, 2014

GM Trent Baalke called Michael Crabtree "one of the best competitors I've ever been around."

INDIANAPOLIS – It's not easy for 49ers general manager Trent Baalke to see one of his players get injured.

"They're like your own– they are your own," Baalke told 49ers.com at the NFL Scouting Combineon Friday. "When they get hurt, it hurts."

This was the case when wide receiver wide receiver Michael Crabtree suffered a torn Achilles during OTAs last May.

Fortunately, Crabtree made a quick recovery, suiting up for his 2013 debut in Week 13 against the St. Louis Rams.

"Relative to the injury, Michael did an outstanding job," Baalke said. "People don't realize the type of commitment it takes to come back from an injury of that significance. Michael did everything asked of him and more and came back. As only Michael can, he came back and made a splash from day one."

In five regular season games and three playoff games, Crabtree totaled 34 catches for 487 yards and one touchdown. Two of his eight career 100-yard games came after his return from injury.

Crabtree's dramatic comeback came as no surprise to those that know him best.

"He's one of the best competitors I've ever been around," Baalke said. "Nothing he does surprises me from a competitive or athletic standpoint."
