Antoine Bethea Named NFC Defensive Player of the Week

Posted Oct 1, 2014

The San Francisco 49ers starting strong safety took home the honor after recording seven tackles, a forced fumble and an interception in a Week 4 home victory over Philadelphia.

Antoine Bethea was everywhere last Sunday.

For his efforts in a 26-21 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles, the San Francisco 49ers safety was named as the NFC's Defensive Player of the Week.

It was the first time Bethea has earned the weekly honor in his nine-year NFL career. Bethea made several big plays in the 49ers win. He recorded seven tackles, a forced fumble and an interception in a Week 4 home victory over Philadelphia.

Bethea also made a game-saving tackle on the 1-yard line to stop Eagles running back LeSean McCoy from scoring a late-game touchdown.

"I don’t know if anyone noticed or not, but A.B. came up and made a tackle that was unbelievable," Patrick Willis told reporters after the game. "I told him that was one of the best plays I’ve seen in a while."

Bethea's contributions were most needed and they took place on his 100th consecutive start.

"It was important to me," Bethea said of the milestone. "That’s something I hold close, dear to my heart. Just being reliable, being able to have my coaches and teammates to rely on me week-in and week-out. That’s something I’ve really held onto my career so far."

It's safe to say the 49ers Faithful can't wait to see what Bethea produces in consecutive start No. 101.

Here are additional notes on Bethea's accomplishment:

  • Early in the third quarter, with the 49ers trailing 21-13, Bethea forced a fumble at the Philadelphia 23-yard line which was recovered by teammate PERRISH COX. That led to a touchdown to cut the deficit to 21-20.
  • Later in the third quarter, Bethea intercepted a pass to end another Philadelphia drive.
  • He is the first 49ers safety with an interception and a forced fumble in a game since 2009 (DASHON GOLDSON).
  • Late in the fourth quarter, with the 49ers clinging to a 26-21 lead, Bethea stopped Eagles running back LESEAN MC COY on the one-yard line. The San Francisco defense would then hold with a goal-line stand.
  • Bethea was part of a defensive unit that allowed 0 offensive points and 213 total net yards. The Eagles entered the game averaging 29 offensive points and 419 total net yards per game.
  • In his ninth year from Howard, this is Bethea’s first career Player of the Week Award.
  • Bethea is the first 49ers safety to be honored since 2003 (TONY PARRISH, Week 16).
