Antoine Bethea Makes Solid First Impression

Posted Mar 12, 2014

New safety Antoine Bethea made a notable debut at 49ers headquarters.

First impressions mean everything.

So much so that Antoine Bethea rushed to buy a suit before visiting with his new team.

Bethea, a two-time Pro Bowl safety and a Super Bowl Champion with the Indianapolis Colts, was working out in Arizona prior to the first day of the 2014 free agency period and didn’t have formal attire close by.

But this wasn’t a problem.

An hour into the frenzy, the eight-year pro agreed to terms with the 49ers on a four-year contract. He then bought a navy blue suit for his flight to the Bay Area where he’d meet with San Francisco’s brass, take a physical and officially sign his contract.

Formal wear aside, Bethea said he truly appreciated his foray into free agency. San Francisco proved they wanted the versatile 5-foot-11, 206-pound safety and demonstrated it by acting swiftly to sign the respected veteran.

“It meant a lot,” Bethea told 49ers.com. “I’ve never been in a position like this. Coming out of high school, I really wasn’t recruited that much. Coming out of college, I was a sixth-round draft pick.

“So being able to have a team come talk to you and really want you within the first hour of free agency, it meant a lot. I’ll say it again – I’m just happy to be here.”

In eight seasons with Colts, Bethea earned a reputation for being a humble, no-nonsense type of player. It’s something he said he wants to continue with his second NFL team.

“I’m a laid-back type of dude,” Bethea said. “You’re not going to hear me say too much. You’re not going to see me in front of the cameras too much. I’m a laid-back dude just out here, enjoying my time and trying to help this team win.”

The new 49ers safety now wants to treat people to success on the field.

As he pulled up to his new office on Tuesday night, Bethea drove by Levi’s Stadium on his way into 49ers headquarters. At that moment, the fresh-dressed defensive back’s next NFL chapter started to become a reality.

Joining the 49ers was perfect timing for Bethea.

“For me to come in at this time, I’m extremely excited,” San Francisco’s newcomer said.
