49ers Sign Rookie QB C.J. Beathard to a 4-year Deal

The San Francisco 49ers have signed their third-round pick to a four-year contract.


The San Francisco 49ers announced on Tuesday that they have signed quarterback C.J. Beathard to a four-year deal. With the signing, the 49ers now have nine of the team’s 10 2017 draft picks under contract.

Beathard (6-2, 215) was the second of the 49ers two third-round picks (104th overall) in this year’s NFL draft out of the University of Iowa. In four seasons with Iowa, he played in 41 games (28 starts) and completed 454 of 782 attempts for 5,562 yards and 40 touchdowns. Beathard finished his collegiate career ranked sixth in school history in career touchdown passes (40), seventh in completions (454) and attempts (782), and eighth in passing yards (5,562).

In 2016, he was named a captain and earned Academic and honorable mention All-Big Ten honors. In addition, he was the recipient of the team’s Hayden Fry Award, Most Valuable Player Award (offense) and the Players Choice Award (offense). Last season, he started all 13 games and completed 170 of 301 attempts for 1,929 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Hawkeyes.

As a junior, he was named the team’s Most Valuable Player (offense), a captain, and also earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors, the “Extra Heartbeat” Award (offense) and Players Choice Award (offense) after starting all 14 games and completing 223 of 362 attempts for 2,809 yards and 17 touchdowns. As a sophomore, he played in nine games (one start) and completed 52 of 92 attempts for 645 yards and five touchdowns. In 2013, he appeared in five games and completed nine of 27 attempts for 179 yards and one touchdown after redshirting in 2012.

A 23-year-old native of Franklin, TN, Beathard attended Battle Ground Academy (Franklin, TN).
