49ers Select QB Kaepernick

Posted Apr 29, 2011

The 49ers have traded with No. 45, No. 108 and No. 141 picks to the Denver Broncos in exchange for Denver's No. 36 overall pick in the second round. With that selction, the 49ers chose Nevada quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

After four seasons in Reno, Kaepernick left campus as the only player in NCAA history with more than 4,000 rushing yards and 10,000 passing yards totaled in a collegiate career.

For more on Kaepernick, read this draft spotlight feature on his collegiate career.

Here's Kapernick's conference call transcript from speaking with local reporters.

On whether he had any idea the 49ers would trade up to pick him:
“I heard a little bit of a rumor earlier today, it just depended on whether it was going to work out or not, but very happy and very excited that it did.”

On rumors that the Raiders were going to try to trade up to get him:
“It’s always an honor when teams even talk about drafting you, so that was definitely something I was excited about, but I mean, I’m very happy to be a 49er now and get in there and start working.”

On whether he is currently in Turlock, California:
“Yes.”

On whether he will drive to 49ers headquarters today or tomorrow:
“Yes, I’m going to be up there. I think they want me to come up tomorrow morning.”

On whether he will meet with 49ers head coach Jim Harbaugh at that point:
“Yes.”

On whether he and Harbaugh have talked today about the expectations of picking him:
“Haven’t talked about expectations, things like that yet, but had a quick conversation with them before they picked me.”

On the impression he got when he had a workout with Harbaugh in Reno at Nevada’s pro day:
“I was very excited about it. He was one coach that was very hands-on. He was very energetic with everything that he was doing. He’s the type of coach that gets you just excited to play the game.”

On being drafted by a relatively local NFL team:
“That’s amazing. That just makes it that much easier for my family and friends to come see me. I know everybody in Reno was hoping I went to the 49ers as well. To me this is a perfect pick.”

On whether it was disappointing to see several quarterbacks get drafted early yesterday in round one:
“It’s definitely disappointing seeing other quarterbacks go before you, but once again, I’ve kind of fallen into a perfect situation. I have a great coach, great teammates that are going to be there on offense, so it’s just exciting for me.”

On his reaction when the plans to visit the 49ers coaches in Santa Clara didn’t happen:
“Well, I actually hadn’t talk to them about coming on a visit. They told me that they wanted to bring me in, but it just never worked out. But after the workout I was very excited about coach Harbaugh and the organization. I’m just happy about this whole opportunity.”

On whether he grew up as a 49ers fan:
“I was actually a Packers fan. I grew up in Wisconsin, so. But I can tell you right now, everybody in family just changes fans in an instant.”

On whether he considers himself to be a project quarterback:
“Not at all. But when it comes down to it, it’s going to be how comfortable coach Harbaugh is with me on the field and how well he thinks I’m performing, so I’m just going to do everything I can to compete and be the best I can be.”

On his throwing motion:
“I think it’s a little bit more abbreviated, but at the same time I haven’t had a coach tell me they have a problem with it. Coach Harbaugh was actually the first coach to tell me that it looked good. I think he was worried about whether I get the ball out quickly or not, and when he told me that, I was very excited about it.”

On whether a lot of coaches told him his throwing motion didn’t look good:
“No, I actually hadn’t had anybody talk to me about it. So, that’s something you kind of just hope for the best, and when you get to a team if you have to correct something, you do everything you can to make it perfect.”

On whether coach Harbaugh will mess with his throwing motion or leave it:
“That’s a good question. I’m going to have to find out when I talk with him. That’s really going to be up to him and what he thinks is going to be best for me.”

On how often he watched Stanford play last season:
“I actually watched them a few times because I know Andrew Luck, their quarterback. So, I have a little bit of an inside scoop on coach Harbaugh and the type of coach he was. I was very excited when my name got called by the 49ers.”

On the offensive system and whether that will accentuate some of his positives:
“Definitely, there are a lot of things they do that are very good. When you watch the way Stanford played and the way their quarterback was utilized, watching them I got very excited. I’m happy to get the opportunity to play in that offense.”

On how he knows Andrew Luck:
“I met him at the Manning camp this past summer.”

On whether they have stayed in touch:
“Yeah, we talked here or there just keeping in touch, seeing how each other are doing.”

On when he made the choice to stick to football over baseball and whether people tried to talk him out of football:
“No, for me, football was always my passion. It was my love. It was what I wanted to do. It was more people telling me I should go play baseball than stick with football, but to me football was what I wanted to do, it was what I love.”

On whether he had discussed playing in third down situations with various teams:
“No, NFL teams haven’t really discussed that with me. For me it’s just going to be whatever the coaches ask of me, I’m going to be ready to do.”

On what he knows about the current quarterback situation of the 49ers:
“I know Alex Smith was their starter. I’ve heard he’s a free agent right now and they have David Carr behind him. For me, it’s just the opportunity to come in and work hard and see what happens.”

On whether he is the 49ers quarterback of the future:
“I’m hoping so, but time will tell.”
