49ers Select DE Tank Carradine

Posted Apr 26, 2013

The 49ers have added a tank to the defensive line, Florida State's Cornelius "Tank" Carradine.

The 49ers have added a tank to the defensive line in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft.

Even after making a trade, San Francisco selected Florida State defensive end Cornellius “Tank” Carradine.

The 49ers traded the No. 34 to the Tennessee Titans in exchange for picks No. 40, 216 and a 2014, third-round pick.

It was Trent Baalke’s fifth trade of the 2013 offseason.

With pick No. 40, the "Tank" was the choice.

"It's exciting to know the 49ers would take me," Carradine said. "I'm excited to get out there and show what I can do."

Carradine posted 11 sacks, 13 tackles-for-loss and 80 tackles in 11 games before his season was cut short to a knee injury on Thanksgiving weekend. Carradine is four months removed from ACL surgery but held a private workout prior to the draft.

San Francisco defensive line coach Jim Tomsula reportedly attended the workout.

Carradine helped Florida State lead the nation in fewest yards allowed per play (3.86) and rank second nationally in total defense (254.14) yards per game.

In 25 career games at Florida State, Carradine made 11 starts and recorded 118 tackles, 16.5 sacks, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.

Carradine was also selected as the ACC's defensive lineman of the week three times in 2012, most of any lineman in the conference.

The Seminole defensive end feels ready to contribute to the 49ers in 2013.

"My knee feels great," Carradine said in a conference call. "There's nothing wrong with my knee and there's no long-term things that I think will go wrong.

"I'm healthy... It's the first injury I ever had."

The 6-foot-4, 276-pound defensive lineman adds depth to San Francisco’s defensive line and presents another pass-rushing threat on passing downs. He's the 34th defensive end selected by the 49ers since 1970 and eighth former Seminole drafted by San Francisco.

Carradine was also the subject of a 49ers.com "49 in 49" profile.
