49ers Receive Three Compensatory Picks

Posted Mar 18, 2013

The 49ers have added a fourth-round pick, plus a pair of seventh-round selections in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Get ready to hear about the San Francisco 49ers at the 2013 NFL Draft.

The NFL announced compensatory draft selections to 16 NFL clubs on Monday and awarded three more selections to the 49ers, giving the team a league-high 14 choices in the upcoming draft.

The 49ers have the most picks since the 1997 Miami Dolphins and will draft five times within the first 93 selections and seven times within the first 131 picks.

In total, 32 compensatory draft choices were awarded. In addition to San Francisco’s 11 selections before the announcement, the 49ers have picked up an extra fourth-round pick (No. 131 overall) and a pair of seventh-round selections (No. 246 and No. 252 overall).

It's important to note, compensatory picks can’t be traded.

San Francisco now has multiple selections in every round but the first and sixth rounds, and also holds four, seventh-round picks.

Rules for compensatory draft selections are as follows: a team losing more or better compensatory free agents than it acquires in the previous year is eligible to receive compensatory draft choices.

The 49ers lost four free agents in 2012 and only signed one in return, wide receiver Mario Manningham.

The most recent compensatory draft pick to impact the 49ers was fourth-year wide receiver Kyle Williams.

Williams was the 206th overall selection in the sixth-round of the 2010 NFL Draft.

The 49ers will look to add more late-round talent to the roster like they did in 2010 with the slot receiver and special teams contributor. Williams, now coming off of a season-ending knee injury, was selected as San Francisco’s 2012 Ed Block Courage Award winner. Williams was chosen as the player on the 49ers roster that exemplified a commitment to sportsmanship and courage.

San Francisco had two seventh-round compensatory selections in 2011 and no compensatory picks in 2012.

This year, however, the 49ers have even more firepower for the upcoming draft after being awarded three compensatory selections which was announced at the NFL's Anual Meeting in Phoenix.

The number of picks a team receives equals the net loss of compensatory free agents up to a maximum of four.  The 32 compensatory picks will be added to the 222 choices in the seven rounds of the 2013 NFL Draft (April 25-27), which will air in primetime for a fourth consecutive year.

The first round will be held on Thursday, April 25 and begins at 5:00 p.m. PT.  The second and third rounds will begin on Friday, April 26 at 3:30 p.m. PT followed by rounds 4-7 on Saturday, April 27 at 9:00 a.m. PT.
