Perhaps it's the most shallow thing we can ask football players we are unfamiliar with, but we ask it anyway.
Who do you compare yourself to?
We ask because the answer is a lot more interesting than the question.
Here are answers collected from the San Francisco 49ers NFL Draft picks at various times this spring.
"Ed Reed. He has some of the same traits that I do.”
"There's a lot of guys that have gotten it done at a high level being under six feet. London Fletcher, he's a guy I watched. Zack Thomas, Chris Spielman is about six feet. A lot of guys have played very well at that size and they kind of paved the way for guys like me."
“Honestly, I haven’t been watching corners that much lately. I played safety all of high school. Played the first two years in college and I got moved to corner. Then I started looking at corners. But not so much as a corner. I actually studied a lot of safeties with Brian Dawkins and Sean Taylor and those guys, Ed Reed... But, going into a comparison, it would definitely be a great comparison to Richard Sherman, but I still have work to get there. I’m not Richard Sherman, I’m Dontae Johnson and hopefully I’ll hope to build my name just off of my work ethic.”
“I don’t really try to compare myself to other people. I watch their games and I try to learn from other people, but I don’t really try to compare myself. I always grew up watching Julius Peppers, and I grew up watching Deacon Jones. So, I’d say, if anybody I’d be like Deacon Jones because I like to be physical, the way I play physically in the football game.”
