49ers Draft Pick Carlos Hyde Admires Frank Gore

Posted May 9, 2014

San Francisco's second-rounder, the 57th overall selection, told reporters he has long looked up to his new teammate. Now he'll compete with Gore for playing time.

Fifty-six players, including two running backs, were taken before Ohio State ball carrier Carlos Hyde got the call on Friday evening.

Then the San Francisco 49ers picked up the phone to Hyde's delight.

"Im so excited to get out there, they have Frank Gore," Hyde told reporters shortly after he went 57th overall to the 49ers. "That's a a guy I compare myself to. That's a guy that I watch in the NFL that plays really well."

Hyde, with whom the 49ers visited at the Scouting Combine in March, is a bigger runner than Gore. He was measured at six feet tall and 230 pounds.

Asked to describe his style of running, he used the word "violent."

The Big Ten's Running Back of the Year now joins a backfield that also comprises veteran Kendall Hunter as well as up-and-comers LaMichael James and Marcus Lattimore.

"I'm definitely going to get in there and compete," said Hyde, who rushed for 1,521 yards as a senior in 2013, "and keep that running game alive.

"I embrace competition. Competition brings out the best in me."
