49ers Count on Boldin’s Leadership

The 49ers trade for Anquan Boldin continues to provide huge dividends.

The 49ers trade for Anquan Boldin continues to provide huge dividends.

The 11-year veteran wide receiver has been a model teammate for his third NFL franchise. Boldin’s expertise is even more crucial now that the 49ers have acquired another wideout through a trade: Jon Baldwin.

“I think we’re very fortunate to have some really good leadership on offense,” offensive coordinator Greg Roman said on Tuesday. “I think Anquan Boldin is a guy that’s done nothing but impressed since day one with how he approaches his job, how he mentors his teammates.”

Along those lines, San Francisco’s third-year play-caller referenced Vernon Davis and Colin Kaepernick as consistent leaders on the offensive side of the ball.

Roman went on to give truthful advice for anyone uninterested in learning from Boldin.

“If I was a young player and I didn’t do that,” Roman began, “I would want somebody to just smack me in the head.”

Roman’s offense has established starters across the board. Only the No. 2 wide receiver job remains open at this point of the preseason.

The creative coordinator wants his young players to pick up on the wisdom of the coaching staff, but also from the starters on offense, Boldin and Davis in particular.

Roman outlined the biggest reasons why leaders like Boldin and Davis can help aspiring teammates:

“If you have the opportunity to watch, listen and learn from players who have that track-record of success and how they do it on a daily basis, how they approach their job, how they get prepared, how they take care of their body, how they study, how they pay attention in meetings, how they can do everything they can possibly do to know their job so that they can do their job at a very high level. That is the one thing that, if you’re a young player and you don’t take advantage of that, we need to have a talk.”

For a newcomer like Baldwin, an eagerness to learn from Boldin already exists.

Steve Breaston, a free agent wideout spent three seasons as a teammate of Boldin’s on the Arizona Cardinals. Breaston also worked with Baldwin the last two seasons in Kansas City.

According to Baldwin, Boldin’s name and reputation was always brought up by Breaston.

“He always talked up Anquan Boldin – how smart he was – how he learned some things from him,” Baldwin said. “With that being said and me being here, I can do the same thing.”

Baldwin has already made sure to speak with San Francisco’s veteran wideout and will continue to seek him out for advice.

“I’m going to be talking with him periodically,” Baldwin said.
