49ers Claim QB Bethel-Thompson, Waive Skelton

San Francisco announced a swapping of signal-callers via the waiver wire on Wednesday afternoon.

The San Francisco 49ers have claimed QB McLeod Bethel-Thompson off waivers from the Minnesota Vikings. To make room for Bethel-Thompson on the roster, the team has waived QB John Skelton.


Bethel-Thompson (6-3, 230) originally entered the league as a rookie free agent with the 49ers in 2011. He was released following training camp and later signed to the to Miami Dolphins practice squad. Bethel-Thompson was signed by the Minnesota Vikings on January 13, 2012, and was inactive for every game that season. He was waived by the Vikings on October 8, 2013.

Bethel-Thompson has also played professionally with the San Jose Sabercats of the Arena Football League and the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the UFL.

A 25-year-old native of San Francisco, CA, Bethel-Thompson spent three seasons at Sacramento State, after transferring from UCLA, where he appeared in 25 games (five starts). He attended Balboa High School where he earned first-team all-city, player of the year, and all-metro honors after throwing for 2,100 yards and 22 touchdowns as a senior. 

Skelton was signed by the 49ers on October 2, 2013.
