11 Locker Room Observations: Oct. 8

Posted Oct 8, 2014

Marcus Martin is on his way back; Jim Harbaugh whistles to himself; and Anthony Davis gives an injury update.

The San Francisco 49ers opened their Levi's® Stadium locker room doors on Wednesday morning. Here's what we came away with...

1. Typically, reporters and cameras are allowed into the locker room on weekday afternoons. Because of the team's "Monday Night Football" schedule, we were allowed in from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. PT. At about 9:05, quarterback Colin Kaepernick came in sweating and wearing a red cut-off shirt, apparently finished with his morning workout.

2. Safety Craig Dahl said he wasn't sure how his role on special teams will be affected by the signing of Bubba Ventrone on Wednesday morning. Dahl, who didn't play on the punt team in 2013, has lined up at the wing and fullback spots on the squad so far this season. He, of course, played a huge rule in the successful fake-punt attempt on Sunday.

3. Veteran wideout Kassim Osgood was waived to pave the way for Ventrone's return. Every time Osgood is cut by the team, we hear chatter from the players about how good of a teammate he is.

4. Speaking of vets, kicker Phil Dawson revealed that his own kids have considered dropping him from their fantasy football teams. They also informed him of his NFC Special Teams Player of the Week honor. "It cuts both ways," he said.

5. Rookie center Marcus Martin, sweating from his own morning workout, said that he hopes to practice fully, which he hasn't done to this point since injuring his knee during training camp. He has been inactive on gameday for the first five games of his NFL career.

6. Martin was impressed with starting center Daniel Kilgore's play against Kansas City Chiefs nose tackle Dontari Poe in Week 5, but the modest Kilgore was more ho-hum about his winning of the matchup up front.

7. Another rookie, outside linebacker Aaron Lynch, explained that team director of elite performance Fergus Connolly designed a meal plan for him that has him at about 260 pounds -- down from his camp weight. Lynch said he was eating two steaks a day during the summer but now has one "once in a while."

8. In the corner of the locker room, there is an old-school graphic instructing players not to tackle while leading with the top of their helmets.

9. Jim Harbaugh walked through at one point, whistling to himself before saying hello to some players.

10. Guard Andrew Tiller, the newest member of the practice squad, took the locker of the man he replaced on the practice squad on Tuesday, offensive tackle John Fullington. Tiller and Fullington were both in camp with the Green Bay Packers this offseason.

11. Starting right tackle Anthony Davis came through the locker room and told one reporter that he has a sprained MCL in his knee, leaving his status in doubt for Week 7 in St. Louis.
