The 49ers announced Thursday they are retiring Jerry Rice’s #80 jersey at their home opener against the Super Bowl champion New Orleans Saints on Monday, September 20.
The Club will retire Rice’s jersey while at the same time recognizing his induction into the Edward J. DeBartolo, Sr. 49ers Hall of Fame for his outstanding achievements and contributions to the 49ers organization during halftime of the Monday night game. Rice’s official induction will take place on the evening of Saturday, September 18, during an exclusive red carpet event at the Palace Hotel in San Francisco.
During Monday’s pregame ceremonies, the 49ers will also be recognizing Rice as the game’s Honorary Team Captain and formally presenting him with his Pro Football Hall of Fame ring with a presentation from the Executive Director of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Steve Perry.
The 49ers encourage all fans to get to their seats as early as possible to witness this historical moment at Candlestick Park.
During the Hall of Fame weekend, Rice will also be presented the official Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., 49ers Hall of Fame blazer, which has been custom created for all members of the 49ers Hall of Fame. The Hall of Fame blazer, which is 49ers red in color, is highlighted by an official Edward J. DeBartolo Sr., 49ers Hall of Fame crest on the front chest pocket. Rice will be wearing his new blazer during Monday’s halftime ceremony.
