Kyle Shanahan 'Hopeful' on Upcoming Joe Staley, Ahkello Witherspoon Returns

Kyle Shanahan spoke with the media following the San Francisco 49ers Week 6 win over the Los Angeles Rams and offered several player updates following the Week 6 contest. Here are the updates from San Francisco's head coach.

D.J. Jones suffered a hamstring strain and Deebo Samuel is dealing with a groin strain following Sunday's game. According to the head coach, both are "day-to-day" and are questionable heading into Week 7 against the Washington Redskins.

Richard Sherman left Sunday's matchup briefly in what looked like a hand injury. The cornerback went into the blue medical tent and was back on the sidelines shortly after. Sherman returned to the game in the following series in what was just a stinger. Shanahan doesn't see any setbacks with Sherman leading to Sunday.

K'Waun Williams also left the game with a hand injury. According to the head coach he is also expected to be good to practice this week.

The biggest news from the head coach was the potential return of Ahkello Witherspoon and Joe Staley. Witherspoon suffered a foot sprain in the Week 3 home opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers and was expected to miss "at least a month." According to Shanahan, the cornerback is ahead of schedule as the 49ers are hoping to get Witherspoon back leading up to the Week 8 matchup against the Carolina Panthers.

"He's going in the right direction," Shanahan said of the cornerback. "I think there's a better chance next week. I do not expect him having a chance this week."

The 49ers have been without their veteran left tackle since Week 2 against the Cincinnati Bengals with a broken fibula. Staley did light conditioning ahead of Sunday's contest against the Rams. Shanahan is hopeful to get Staley back prior to the 49ers Week 9 divisional matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.

"I'm still hoping for Arizona," Shanahan said. "That's where I'm looking at for him. Maybe a chance for Carolina, but I would consider that very lucky. In my mind, I'm hoping for Arizona."

Shanahan also noted there is no updated timetable on Mike McGlinchey (knee) and Kyle Juszczyk (MCL). Both are scheduled for a 4-6 week return.
