Towns of Santa Clara is Week 2 HS Player of Week

Posted Sep 23, 2011

The 49ers High School Player of the Week Award for week 2 goes to T.J Towns from Santa Clara High School in Santa Clara.

The defensive end really showcased his talents with three and a half sacks to help shut out the Del Mar Dons of San Jose 21-0. After jumping out to a lead, Towns and his teammates were able to pin their ears back and go after the Del Mar Dons quarterback.

“I credit my coaches with teaching us the proper techniques and putting us in a position to succeed,” said the 5’10, 200 pound junior.  This is the first year that Towns has played defensive end—switching over from linebacker last year.

“He has adjusted very well to the position and continues to get better,” remarked Santa Clara head coach Mark Krail.

After registering one sack in the first half, T.J. would end up putting Del Mar’s quarterback on his back two and a half more times in the third quarter. Outside linebackers Dion Perry and Patrick McCaffery also played a pivotal role in stopping the Del Mar Dons offense.

“Our whole defense really stepped up and made a lot of plays,” said Towns. “ We have a great defensive leader in junior middle linebacker Jason Aguirre.”

Along with improving his game on the field, T.J. has also been working hard in the classroom, improving his G.P.A. almost half a letter grade.

As the home school of 49ers High School Player of the Week, Santa Clara High School will receive a $500 grant for their football program. Towns will receive a 49ers hat and t-shirt, a certificate signed by 49er head coach Jim Harbaugh, two tickets to a 49ers home game and recognition on 49ers.com.  At the end of the season, Towns will be invited to the 49ers Training Facility in Santa Clara, CA to accept a trophy recognizing his achievements.
