The 49ers High School Player of the Week Award for week 3 goes to Ricky McDiarmid from Leigh High School in San Jose.
The 5’10 senior wide receiver could not be contained last Friday, catching three touchdown passes from junior quarterback Gabe Davis to help the Leigh Longhorns defeat the Santa Teresa Saints 30-20. McDiarmid was lined up all over the offensive side of the ball, taking snaps at quarterback, tailback, and as a wide receiver in the slot position and out wide.
“I wouldn’t be doing my job if I didn’t get him (McDiarmid) the ball at least 10 times a game,” said first year head coach Kyle Padila. “Santa Teresa did a good job of shutting down the run. Once we got him the ball in space, he was out of there.”
Ricky’s best weapon on the field is his speed with a 40-yard dash time clocked at 4.49 seconds. With Leigh High now running the Pistol formation offense, Coach Padila and the Longhorns are able to utilize their playmakers by taking what the defense gives them. Strictly a running back last year, Ricky has been asked to take on an expanded role in his senior year.
The Longhorns have already eclipsed their win total from last year with a 2-1 start.
“We are having lots of fun this year, there’s not so much pressure on us,” explained McDiarmid. “We talk a lot during the games, about what’s open and what we see on the field, then he (Coach Padila) picks the plays.”
Ricky is a three-sport athlete, lettering in baseball and basketball as well as football. Despite remaining busy all year long, McDairmid maintains a 3.5 GPA in the classroom, exemplifying what it means to be the 49ers Player of the Week.
As the home school of 49ers High School Player of the Week, Leigh High School will receive a $500 grant for their football program. McDiarmid will receive a 49ers hat and t-shirt, a certificate signed by 49er head coach Jim Harbaugh, two tickets to a 49ers home game and recognition on 49ers.com. At the end of the season, McDiarmid will be invited to the 49ers Training Facility in Santa Clara, CA to accept a trophy recognizing his achievements.
