USA Football, the sport's national governing body, leads the game's development, inspires participation, and creates a better and safer experience for all youth, high school, and other amateur players. The 49ers pride themselves in player-safety practices, working closely with USA Football on a variety of programming to ensure the game of football is being played better and safer. The 49ers share in that mission and believe it is important to make the education and the resources available for players, parents, and coaches.

In partnership with USA Football, the 49ers host the first stop of the Protection Tour each year, a series of Player Safety Coaching Clinics, Moms Football Safety Clinics, High School Media Day, and endorse Heads Up Football® in all of our youth football programs.

These clinics and programs help ensure today’s youth football coaches are teaching the fundamentals of football safely and efficiently, while their athletes are using the latest technology and gaining a true understanding of the game. They also ensure parents are being providing with all the knowledge of proper helmet fitting, tackling techniques, concussion awareness, and heat and hydration to take a more educated role in their child’s youth football experience.

  • Player Safety Coach Clinics

Youth and high school football coaches are encouraged to become a certified Player Safety Coach. This course educates coaches on the core components of Heads Up Football: concussion awareness, equipment fitting, heat and hydration and Heads Up Tackling. The 49ers host a series of clinics over the course of the year to give local coaches the opportunity to complete their certification.

  • USA Football Protection Tour

The 49ers were once again selected as the first stop along USA Football’s 2015 Protection Tour, hosting the free, one-day event for local youth football players and parents. Hundreds of families attended the program at the SAP Performance Facility where parents had the opportunity to learn USA Football’s Head Up Football® tackling techniques alongside their child.

  • 49ers Mom's Clinic

In partnership with USA Football, the 49ers hosted moms of youth and high school football players for a free Football Safety Clinic at 49ers Headquarters. The event serves as an interactive, open forum for mothers to learn more about the game in order to take a more active and educated role in their child’s youth football experience. Moms also participated in Heads Up Football drills on the 49ers practice field.

  • High School Media Day

The 49ers partnered with USA Football and MaxPreps to hold a High School Media Day at Levi’s® Stadium. Coaches and players attended a media training session before conducting press conferences in the 49ers auditorium where over a dozen media members from the Bay Area asked questions. They also participated in USA Football’s Heads Up tackling, helmet fitting, and MaxPreps photo shoot.

  • USA Football Heads Up Football

Heads Up Football® is a comprehensive program developed by USA Football to advance player safety. The San Francisco 49ers proudly practice and endorse Heads Up Football® tackling, player safety protocols, and all Heads Up Football® education components. As part of our continued commitment, the 49ers strive to make multiple opportunities available for coaches, players and parents to become Heads Up certified.
