Machado Named Kelly-Moore Paints HS Coach of the Week

Posted Sep 29, 2009

The San Francisco 49ers Charlie Wedemeyer Coach of the Week award presented by Kelly-Moore Paints for Week 4 goes to Mike Machado from Valley Christian High School.

This past Saturday afternoon, Valley Christian beat Scotts Valley High School 42-28.

In what was the last chance for both teams to do some fine tuning before the start of league play, the Valley Christian Warriors found they had a lot to be excited about.

Offensively, Valley Christian was led by sophomore Byron Marshall. The 15 year old running back rushed for 215 yards and 3 touchdowns, on 19 carries. Byron is part of the youth movement taking place at Valley Christian this season, as Coach Machado professed to them being “young on both sides of the ball.”

Despite the success, Machado still sees room for improvement. “We will look at the film and correct our mistakes,” stated Machado.

When asked about what they would have to do differently in their league opener next week against Archbishop Mitty, Machado responded with, “We’ll need to be able to sustain drives, and keep [Mitty’s offense] off the field.”

However, when Mitty’s offense does take the field, Valley Christian can count on senior linebacker Tevin Craig.

Coach Machado described Craig as the “Defensive QB.”

Against Scotts Valley, Craig had 16 tackles (8 solo) and was the on-field director for a defense that limited Scotts Valley to 38 yards rushing on the night.

In addition to being named Coach of the Week, Coach Machado and the Valley Christian High School football program will receive $1,000 from the 49ers Foundation, along with a $500 gift certificate from Kelly-Moore Paints to go towards beautifying Valley Christian High School.
